About the league
What has changed?
With the inaugural seaon of Herriman High School in 2011, the decision was made to change Herriman youth baseball to support our community and provide a better baseball experience. Here are some of the changes:
- Herriman Baseball will be chartered through the USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) and the newly founded WBA (Wasatch Baseball Association)
- Ages 3-7 will play as we did in the past with no travel in regular season
- Ages 8-18 will play as Herriman and wear Herriman uniforms
- To embrace local rivalries, ages 8-18 will compete against neighboring cities (Bingham, Hillcrest, etc.) and some local travel will occur for away games
Why the change?
We want to ensure that every player has an equal opportunity and gets the best baseball experience possible. Although not intentional, our old format catered to players with the best playing ability. All players played at the same level with the higher skilled players getting more playing time and occupying the most active positions. What happens to someone who is new to baseball or hasn't developed the skills to play at a higher level? How do we address higher skilled players leaving for travel or super leagues? These were questions that had to be asked. To address the problem we changed our format. Here are some specifics:
Ages 3-7
- Will play as they did in year's past
- No regular season travel
Ages 8-18
- Week long tryouts - to ensure proper placement and reduce politics
- Each age group will be split into divisions determined by ability - This will allow players to play with their level and improve their game.. giving them more playing time, better opportunities, etc.
- Divisions will be be labled with a generic name (ie. American League, National League, etc.) for each age group - All teams will be wearing Herriman uniforms and divisions will look indistinguishable to the kids.
- Tournament play for each division - This will result in a larger number of players being able to play post-season games. in the past these were all-star teams comprising of about 17% of our kids. With the changes we expect that number to grow to close to 50%.
- Local support - We will wear Herriman uniforms in support of our community and the new Herriman High School. This will embrace local rivalries and invoke school pride.
- Travel to neighboring cities - Rivalry excitment mirroring the high school.
- Coaching - Coaches will be requred to attend training and encouraged to help each other.
